Teleconnections forced by Sahel precipitation

PI: Anantha Aiyyer
Institution: North Carolina State University
Abstract:
In this study we are examining the impact of variability of rainfall over the Sahel region of West Africa on the climate of Western Europe. Preliminary data analysis has indicated the existence of a pathway for teleconnection between the two regions via stationary Rossby waves forced by Sahel precipitation anomalies. This pathway is most prominent on decadal time scales.

It is of interest to examine the variability of this pathway using climate model projection for the 21st century. We intend to examine the output from the suite of coupled ocean-atmosphere model simulations conducted for the IPCC 4th assessment report.
